BE SMART ON THE INTERNET

Most people you meet on the Internet are strangers. You don’t speak to strangers or let them into your house. The Internet should be the same. For you to be safe on the Internet you need to be a SMART user.

KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SECRET

Never give out your name, address, school or anyother information about yourself to people you meet on the Internet.

Never send any pictures of yourself or people from your family.

Don’t tell anybody other than parents and carers your passwords.

If you are worried about things you see or hear tell a parent or teacher straight away.

Don’t ever agree to meet somebody from the Internet in real life without telling a parent or carer. Some people pretend to be children but are adults who could be dangerous to you.

OPENING ATTACHMENTS

Only open e-mails from people you know. Ask an adult if you’re not sure. You might be opening a thing called a virus which can damage your computer.

If you open something by accident which worries you tell an adult immediately and they will tell you what to do.

Sometimes you are asked to forward a “chain” e-mail or something bad might happen to you. Delete these e-mails and do not worry. Don’t pass them on.

DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ

Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. If you want to find out information for schoolwork especially when at home try sites you trust such as BBC Schools. If you need more help ask your teacher who will point you in the right direction.

TELL TELL TELL

If you see something on the Internet that you think is wrong tell a grown- up straight away. You won’t get in trouble for telling. If people are being nasty or you don’t like their questions stop talking to them and come off the computer.

If somebody wants to meet you who you’ve talked to online tell your parents/carers as soon as possible.

If you receive a nasty online message from a bully tell somebody immediately and show them the message.
